  • The KSA is by far the largest healthcare market in the GCC as it accounts for more than half (52.3%) the region's market.
  • A 10-year development plan running from 2010 to 2020 aims to create five tertiary or quaternary hospital hubs, with Riyadh in the centre, Makkah in the west, Asir in the south, Dammam in the east and Al Jouf in the north.
  • According to figures from Alpen Capital, based on data from the International Monetary Fund, WHO and MoH, Saudi Arabia’s health care spend is set to reach a total of $31.5bn by 2018.
  • Industry reports have shown that in 2005, KSA spent SAR 48.76 billion (USD 13 billion) on healthcare—25 per cent of which was supplied by the private sector. Public healthcare spending saw a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2 per cent between 1999 and 2005. Experts are predicting that spending is expected to reach SAR 75.02 billion (USD 20 billion) by 2016.
  • The Kingdom is seeking to increase physical healthcare capacity across its entire geography, including border areas and remote regions while also looking to provide qualified manpower for these new facilities.
  • New technologies such as e-health services are being increasingly adopted to lower healthcare costs in the region besides improving the quality of service.
  • The Ministry of Health (MoH) is implementing 85 Healthcare IT projects and working on another 22 initiatives to improve the acquisition, storage and sharing of data across all tiers of the health service.
